Packaging and Warranties
In the past, we used to take out loans to buy a house or an apartment, only to discover that we either didn’t have enough space or needed to buy or rent an additional room just to store all the packaging for two years.
To benefit from the warranty on the products we purchased, we had to keep the original boxes for everything: the television, refrigerator, electric toothbrush, epilator, electric shaver, food processor, microwave oven, vacuum cleaner, dishwasher, washing machine, DVD player, stereo system, laptop, computer, monitor… The list goes on!
I’m exhausted just writing all of this down, let alone imagining having to organise everything in a room dedicated entirely to empty boxes!
However, a year ago, clear regulations were introduced establishing that consumers are no longer required to keep the original packaging to benefit from a product’s warranty.
This means we finally have extra space that we can use for other purposes, rent out, or simply do without.
I believe such legislation was necessary to put an end to an absurd interpretation of consumers’ warranty rights.
Seventeen years after Romania joined the European Union, it has only been a year since we were finally freed from the obligation to keep all these boxes.
We are European citizens, and we have rights. Unfortunately, sometimes it takes far too long for us to truly experience the benefits of those rights.
So, let’s make one thing clear: you no longer need to keep the original packaging!
You can benefit from the warranty on durable consumer goods without having to hear the familiar excuse: „We cannot accept the product without its original packaging.”
